Learning to evaluate where my time is going and making plans to be more intentional and strategic with how I spend it has been so important and helpful as I work to grow my business, and even cultivate my relationships.
For most of us, discipline doesn’t come naturally. It is something that we must train ourselves to. We must put practices into place to help keep us on track! I have implemented 5 practices in my life to keep me focused and productively on task and today I am sharing those practices with you!
Read on for 5 practices to help keep you on tack and be more intentional with your time.
Prioritize Your Tasks and Designate Time For Them.
If you’re like me then you love lists. There is something so satisfying about crossing an item off of a list. When it comes to time management though, a list on its own simply won’t cut it.
Prioritize your tasks and designate time for them by making a plan with time slots and categories for each task that you need to accomplish for the day, week, or month. Scheduling time for what we need to accomplish is very effective and helps reduce wasted time! Mapping out what tasks I need to accomplish, and setting aside specific time slots to knock out those tasks has helped me so much in both my personal life and entrepreneur work. Make that workflow schedule, girl!
Nourish Your Creativity
Intentionality can be difficult to cultivate. Happily though, the more we feed ourselves the right things that nourish our creativity and support our minds, the more we desire those things! This makes intentionality easy over time. It is easy to sit down and surf social media or binge on our favorite Netflix show – those things bog us down with negativity and non-constructive mindsets.
Rather than letting those things pull you into non-productivity, focus your attention on something that refreshes your mind: reading, listening to educational podcasts, learning something new etc. These types of activities nourish our creativity and productivity by stimulating our mind – keeping us more alert, and thoughtful with our time.
Effective communication is essential to being more intentional with our time. As a blogger/photographer I have learned the importance of communicating effectively. I am constantly bombarded with emails/inquires and they each need a reply of some sort.
Wherever you are able, create canned response templates for emails and messages. This is not appropriate for every response, but, where it is appropriate utilize it! You will free yourself up to respond in a more in depth way to messages that require it, and save yourself time for other necessary tasks or just a moment of peacefulness to reset.
The other side of effective communication is more personal. For me, getting into arguments or allowing myself to be exposed to gossip through group texts and Facebook messages is so damaging to my productivity. Remove those outlets from your life. Gracefully remove yourself from a text thread, Facebook message, or other avenue that is inputting negativity into your life. Communication that is unnecessarily negative harms our outlook and increases non-productivity. Find a comfortable balance of effectively communicating by getting rid of the negative inputs – both professionally and personally.
Bite The Bullet
It’s not always fun, but, one of the best ways to be more productive with your time is to bite the bullet on the tasks that are not your favorite. Many of us like to leave our most dreaded tasks till last [ I can procrastinate with the best of them. ]. That, unfortunately, is often distracting from the many other tasks that we have to accomplish because those dreaded tasks hang over our head. Knock those dreaded tasks out and move on, babes! You will feel such a sense of relief.
Block Off Free Time
This is SO important! We need free time, girls. I would be a frazzled mess if I did not get to have a little fun sometimes. We working girls are busy. We have responsibilities and passions that we work hard to accomplish. Blocking off free time to do something that lets you turn off the workflow is necessary! Let your hair down, dance around to your favorite music, and eat your favorite food! Whatever makes your feel free and relaxed.
Life can be hectic and overwhelming.. but it’s a wildly beautiful ride! These five practices have helped me be more intentional and productive in my day to day, and I hope that they help you as well. Making time for yourself, nourishing your mind, kicking procrastination to curb, communicating effectively, and having a little fun are fantastic ways to be more intentional with our time and make the most of each day!
