My Silent Struggle With Depression

Hello sweet friends. It has been a minute since I shared something deeply personal here on the blog. I am getting down to the nitty gritty today and being completely vulnerable with you guys. Most of you know me as a beacon of positivity and encouragement, the girl who finds the best in a situation. But in the midst of it all I have battled depression – a lonely pit that often swallows all of the light in my life.

I have wanted to open up about this subject for a very long time. First, though, I had to sort out my own heart and find the words to properly communicate my struggle in a way that I hope will encourage you if you are walking through depression yourself.

My Silent Struggle With DepressionMy Silent Struggle With DepressionMy Silent Struggle With Depression

I sat down so many times and tried to write this post. I stared at the blinking cursor on the screen desperate to pour out my truth. Fear has kept me from being able to share my struggle. The fear of admitting that I battle depression almost daily absolutely grips me. My heart wants to share the real, raw truth but that it not an easy task. Bearing my heart for the world to see [ read ] is terrifying.

No one wants to admit that they struggle with depression and anxiety. There is a definite stigma that comes with it. In reality, admitting that you are struggling is the most freeing thing that you can do for yourself. Admitting that you are scared, lonely, hopeless, lost… that takes a mountain of courage. Admitting those things is 100% the first step to conquering the dark hold of depression and finding the light again.

Finding Relief From Depression

Let me start off by saying that I have been affected by not only depression, but, anxiety as well. I think the two often go hand-in-hand. In my life these two emotional struggles are connected by a common stressor, but are not usually present at the same time. My depression stems from my chronic physical pain/health concerns paired with constant worry about my health in the long run. The pain and sickness beats me down.

And that’s where anxiety creeps in. Never knowing when I will have an attack or how badly it will be creates tremendous anxiety within me. There is a loss of control in it all that honestly scares me. My body so often seems to fail me or blatantly work against me. It is defeating and disheartening. Yet God is faithful. He always sustains me, carries me, and repairs my broken anxiety riddled heart.

My Silent Struggle With DepressionMy Silent Struggle With Depression

Depression is an emotionally isolating mindset to be in. How do you live joyously when you feel empty and broken?

The answer is simple and yet feels impossible. The answer is: you just live. Day by day and moment by moment – choosing each second to acknowledge the good and the joy around you. Depression feels like a dark pit where you sit alone, unable to see or feel anything good. But the good is still there even when you cannot see it or feel it. Acknowledging the presence of all that is good helps lift the burden of hopelessness. It is the light at the end of tunnel – reminding you that there is relief.

There is no pit so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still.

– Corrie Ten Boom

I love the above quote so much. It is a beautiful reminder of such a powerful truth. There is no place too dark, too deep, or too isolated for God. God’s love can reach down into the blackest pit and find you. He can and will rescue you from the darkness of depression. He rescues me everyday. Sometimes in a deep breath that pulls away the tears and sometimes in a sweeping peace that settles my heart.

My Silent Struggle With DepressionMy Silent Struggle With Depression

An Important Truth

One important thing to remember if you share this struggle is that you are more than depression. You are a whole person. I have to remind myself of this often. The stigma of “mental illness” around depression/anxiety is wrong. Battling these emotions does NOT make you mentally ill or mentally unstable. Depression is something that we experience – it does not define who we are. It takes incredible strength to weather the ups and downs of these emotions. Because of the stigma there is shame connected to it all. I have kept silent about my struggle because I do not want people falsely attaching that stigma to me. I am a whole person that struggles at times with depression/anxiety because of tremendous physical pain. That is all.

Remember that you are whole and you are strong.

A Deeper Beauty: What God Says About Being Beautiful

Hey girls! Happy June! I have been thinking a lot lately about the pressures on us [ women ] to look a certain way, and the insecurities that those pressures foster. This question kept popping into my mind: Who do I let set the standard for my beauty?

Look, I do not have a thigh gap and I am so okay with that! I am not defined by whether or not my body fits into societal standards. My heart and soul are what make up my beauty – and the same goes for you. Your intelligence and your wit, your tenderness and compassion, your strengths and your weaknesses are what make up your beauty, but more importantly, it is your holiness that makes you more beautiful than anything that the eye can see. Nothing in this would, no unrealistic standard, can ever detract for the beauty of your inward being.

A Deeper Beauty: What God Says About Being Beautiful A Deeper Beauty: What God Says About Being Beautiful A Deeper Beauty: What God Says About Being Beautiful

Your Beauty Goes Deeper

God is the creator of beauty, and He says that you are the crown jewel of His creation. Stop for a moment and think of the most beautiful thing that you have ever seen. Maybe it is a sunrise or a landscape of snowcapped mountains. God is the author of creation. God says that you are more beautiful than such wonders, and treasured beyond measure.

Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel — rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God

– 1 Peter 3:3-4

God’s word teaches us that inward beauty is lasting and true. Our inward beauty is eternal. This world bombards you and I with the lie that we are not outwardly beautiful enough. God’s word says it is “the hidden person of the heart” that is incorruptibly beautiful. I have found such comfort in that truth.

Beauty In Holiness

Instead of focusing so much energy on outward vanities, focus on growing the hidden person of the heart. Focus on becoming more inwardly beautiful. We make an investment that is eternal when we focus on growing inwardly, and pursuing holiness. A beautiful heart radiates more light than any primping ever could.

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness..

– Psalm 96:9

We so often associate beauty with happiness – media certainly portrays that message. Scripture teaches us that God equates beauty to holiness. What keeps us from holiness is the ugliness of sin. We grow more inwardly beautiful when we become more holy, but we must first repent of our sin. Reject the lies that society peddles and pursue the beauty of holiness.

Enjoy Feminine Expression

Fashion and makeup [ and other forms of beautification ] are not bad. They are wonderful expressions of creativity. But that is all that they should be – expressions. Put on makeup because you enjoy it. Wear clothes that express your personality. Enjoy those feminine expressions freely but do not let them define you. Chase after the hidden person of the heart. Chase after holiness. You will find that you are more beautiful for it, in the most meaningful way possible.

because it’s okay to enjoy fashion!

Hey gang. Happy summer! I hope your Memorial Day weekend is going great. Austin and I are spending the weekend with family from out of town. The house is full of squeals and giggles from nieces and nephews roaming around the house. Hectic is the perfect word to describe it! 5 Ways To Be More Intentional and Productive With Your Time

Learning to evaluate where my time is going and making plans to be more intentional and strategic with how I spend it has been so important and helpful as I work to grow my business, and even cultivate my relationships.

For most of us, discipline doesn’t come naturally. It is something that we must train ourselves to. We must put practices into place to help keep us on track! I have implemented 5 practices in my life to keep me focused and productively on task and today I am sharing those practices with you!

Read on for 5 practices to help keep you on tack and be more intentional with your time.

The Nosh Life Blog: 5 Ways To Be More Intentional and Productive With Your Time. The Nosh Life Blog: 5 Ways To Be More Intentional and Productive With Your Time. The Nosh Life Blog: 5 Ways To Be More Intentional and Productive With Your Time.

Prioritize Your Tasks and Designate Time For Them.

If you’re like me then you love lists. There is something so satisfying about crossing an item off of a list. When it comes to time management though, a list on its own simply won’t cut it.

Prioritize your tasks and designate time for them by making a plan with time slots and categories for each task that you need to accomplish for the day, week, or month. Scheduling time for what we need to accomplish is very effective and helps reduce wasted time! Mapping out what tasks I need to accomplish, and setting aside specific time slots to knock out those tasks has helped me so much in both my personal life and entrepreneur work. Make that workflow schedule, girl!

Nourish Your Creativity

Intentionality can be difficult to cultivate. Happily though, the more we feed ourselves the right things that nourish our creativity and support our minds, the more we desire those things! This makes intentionality easy over time. It is easy to sit down and surf social media or binge on our favorite Netflix show – those things bog us down with negativity and non-constructive mindsets.

Rather than letting those things pull you into non-productivity, focus your attention on something that refreshes your mind: reading, listening to educational podcasts, learning something new etc. These types of activities nourish our creativity and productivity  by stimulating our mind – keeping us more alert, and thoughtful with our time.

5 Ways To Be More Intentional and Productive With Your Time.5 Ways To Be More Intentional and Productive With Your Time.5 Ways To Be More Intentional and Productive With Your Time.5 Ways To Be More Intentional and Productive With Your Time.

Communicate Effectively

Effective communication is essential to being more intentional with our time. As a blogger/photographer I have learned the importance of communicating effectively. I am constantly bombarded with emails/inquires and they each need a reply of some sort.

Wherever you are able, create canned response templates for emails and messages. This is not appropriate for every response, but, where it is appropriate utilize it! You will free yourself up to respond in a more in depth way to messages that require it, and save yourself time for other necessary tasks or just a moment of peacefulness to reset.

The other side of effective communication is more personal. For me, getting into arguments or allowing myself to be exposed to gossip through group texts and Facebook messages is so damaging to my productivity. Remove those outlets from your life. Gracefully remove yourself from a text thread, Facebook message, or other avenue that is inputting negativity into your life. Communication that is unnecessarily negative harms our outlook and increases non-productivity. Find a comfortable balance of effectively communicating by getting rid of the negative inputs – both professionally and personally.

Bite The Bullet

It’s not always fun, but, one of the best ways to be more productive with your time is to bite the bullet on the tasks that are not your favorite. Many of us like to leave our most dreaded tasks till last [ I can procrastinate with the best of them. ]. That, unfortunately, is often distracting from the many other tasks that we have to accomplish because those dreaded tasks hang over our head. Knock those dreaded tasks out and move on, babes! You will feel such a sense of relief.

Block Off Free Time

This is SO important! We need free time, girls. I would be a frazzled mess if I did not get to have a little fun sometimes. We working girls are busy. We have responsibilities and passions that we work hard to accomplish. Blocking off free time to do something that lets you turn off the workflow is necessary! Let your hair down, dance around to your favorite music, and eat your favorite food! Whatever makes your feel free and relaxed.

Life can be hectic and overwhelming.. but it’s a wildly beautiful ride! These five practices have helped me be more intentional and productive in my day to day, and I hope that they help you as well. Making time for yourself, nourishing your mind, kicking procrastination to curb, communicating effectively, and having a little fun are fantastic ways to be more intentional with our time and make the most of each day!

Finding The Good In The Midst of Trials: An Open Book On Suffering

Hello sweet friends! I am so happy to be able to share some encouragement with you today on finding the good in the midst of trials. I am not an expert on this matter, but I do have insight. I have battled chronic illness for nine years – with no solution, no real answers, and at times no hope. In the last four years I sustained a severe head injury that has left me with painful and frustrating symptoms that effect me everyday. My daily life is muddied by one struggle on top of the other. Sometimes the pain brings me to my knees, and other times the emotional toll does. Life is not easy [ for any of us ] but it can be beautiful and there is good in each day.
As I continue to weather my own trials, I want to encourage you to take on yours with grace and the knowledge that you are not alone. I can empathize with your pain, but moreover, God knows your pain and He will not leave you to be crushed by your burdens.
Read on for 3 encouragements to help you find the good in the midst of trials.

Accept What You Cannot Change

I firmly believe that God does not give us more than we can handle. It will feel like the weight of the trial is crushing you, but our Heavenly Father has made a way of escape from the burden and pain, through Him. He will not allow the trials to completely crush you, no matter how heavy it feels.

I have learned through my own suffering that the good cannot be truly appreciated or cherished without the bad. Pain makes us appreciate relief, a questioning heart makes us appreciate peace, and trials that test our resilience make us appreciate inner strength.

The beauty of the good things in this life is in the pain that we have weathered to get to them. Trials make peace all the sweeter.

Accepting what cannot be changed and choosing to acknowledge what is good will help you find the peace that we all yearn for in life. Until we accept the things that we cannot change, we cannot begin to move forward and prepare ourselves to bear the weight of that burden.

Be More Than Your Suffering [Choose Joy ]

Suffering of any kind can overshadow who you are. When we battle daily it is easy to become our suffering. You are so much more than your pain and you are more than heartache. We are complete people with loves, talents, unique perspectives, and wonderful creativity. Hold onto who you are – Utilize your talents, explore your creativity, and enjoy the things that you love!Do not allow your suffering/trials to become all that you are. Choose joy today. Dig down deep inside of who you are, and live. These trials will not overtake you, nor will they overshadow you.

You are more.

Everyday Is A Fresh Start [ Make The Most Of It ]

Waking up every morning knowing that ‘today is a fresh start’ makes weathering life’s trials or personal suffering a little easier. Instead of tackling the trial or the pain all at once, take it on a little bit at a time – day by day. Yesterday’s pain is gone, yesterday’s fear is gone, yesterday’s struggles are gone. So live today with renewed strength! Face today, and only today.

It is easy to say God is good when there is no suffering. The heavy reality is that we live in a fallen world. God is still good when we are suffering and when we feel like we are crumbling.

Part of living in the present moment rather than the past or the future is finding strength for the moment. I find my moment by moment strength in Christ. On my own I could not bear the weight of chronic illness, the fatigue, or the uncertainty. Some may not agree with this point of view [ I’m okay with that. ] but there is great strength in the Lord. Seeking Him daily for your moment by moment strength with bolster you like nothing else can. God is good in the pain. God is good in the relief. You will not be crushed

Life can throw trials our way that often seem too difficult to weather. Finding the good in the midst of suffering or heartache will feel impossible. From one who has suffered [ and continues to struggle daily ] let me just tell you – it is not impossible and there is good to be found and cherished in the midst of those hardships. Seek God’s strength, make the most of today, and be more than your suffering.

Pattern Mixing: Neutral Leopard x Stripes

Happy Wednesday! I hope your week is off to a spectacular start! Austin and I hit the town this past weekend – which really means that we got milkshakes + mochaccinos, played around in some palm fronds, and wandered downtown. We’re such party animals ;). We have been so busy knocking out renovations at the condo. A relaxed weekend was just what we needed to recharge and get back in the renovation game this week.

The temps are very up and down lately. This weekend was a chilly one and I jumped on the opportunity to get in one last cool weather outfit. The clothes say fall but my heart says spring! I really love pairing contrasting patterns together, and this combo has to be the most fun to wear. I snagged this leopard long sleeve tee and this cropped stripe jacket a few seasons ago from LOFT. Pieces that you can wear for several seasons are wardrobe essentials in my book.
These exact oldies but goodies can’t be found in the shop now but I have linked some similar pieces below that are just as cute!

On Being Vulnerable: 3 Ways To Face Vulnerability With Courage

Vulnerability if often the first thing that we look for in others, but the last thing that we want others to see in us. How beautiful it is to release those chains of fear that hold us back from showing others who we really are – the good, the bad, weakness, and strength. Today I am getting more personal with this post – plus I am sharing a few encouragements to help you face/embrace vulnerability with courage.
Read on for 3 encouragements to help you embrace being vulnerable.

The Truth About Vulnerability

Vulnerability is something that we often do not want to show, but we need to. We need vulnerability from others, and we need to be vulnerable with others. Vulnerability is a very important link in the chain of relationships. Without it, do we truly know one another? To be vulnerable is to trust and entrust the hidden parts of our being to another for safe keeping – be it a friend or significant other.
The truth is that I was terrified of being vulnerable, of being seen, for such a long time. Opening yourself up completely gives others the power to hurt you, and that, well, that at times seemed unbearable. The funny thing though is that I love being a confidant to others. I want to know their heart and their hurt.. I want vulnerability from others but struggle at times to open up in the same way. I have learned though that vulnerability frees you to experience the deepest love and greatest joy.
The reality is that we are all vulnerable, no matter how hard we try to hide it away. The truth is this: vulnerability does open us up to hurt, to disappointment, to heartbreak – but without vulnerability we cannot experience some of the greatest joys, and the most vibrant parts of life. Vulnerability faces fear with defiance, accepting the possibility of attack, and believing in the potential of shelter in another.
Understanding what vulnerability really means for us is the first step in breaking free from the fear of it. Remember that vulnerability is courage with tenderness.

Let Go Of Control

Acknowledging our imperfections, and accepting them helps us let go of the need to control how others  view us. Part of not wanting to be vulnerable is not wanting to be seen for who we really are. Letting go of that control frees us to embrace being vulnerable with those close to us in life.
We all get hurt. Period. End of story. But you know what? We make it through the pain, and we grow stronger. Hurt doesn’t end us. Do not let the fear of potential momentary pain hinder you from experiencing the deep love and friendship that vulnerability builds.

One Small Step In The right Direction

Being vulnerable doesn’t happen overnight. And we certainly do not have to bare the entirety of our soul in one sitting. Being vulnerable starts out in the simplest form; acknowledging someone else’s pain and sympathizing with them is a beautiful example of allowing yourself to be vulnerable without baring it all:
” I had a similar experience. It was a really difficult time for me, but I worked through it overtime. It’s hard right now, I know. I’m here if you want to vent and share your heart. “
Just like that, you are vulnerable. You show your heart, without baring it all, and in the process you give your friend or loved one the freedom to be completely open and vulnerable themselves. One small step in the right direction is better than a massive jump.
Take your time opening up.. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Just take one small step.
